Instruction:
-
Refer to workshop manual to remove
cylinder head from vehicle to expose the valves. A rough
sketch of the head showing the various connections may
help to ensure that all parts are correctly re-fitted.
Please note that replacement gaskets will be required
for cylinder head, rocker cover, and in some cases manifold
and carburetor.
-
Place the head on wooden blocks to
prevent damage to either valves or machined base. After
checking that new head gasket is identical, old head gasket
can then be removed and discarded.
-
Where fitted remove clip from split
collets. Before using compressor always loosen collets
from spring cap. This can be achieved by using a short
piece of metal tube and light hammer to strike spring
cap (not valve). Failure to do this can result in damage
to both engine and compressor.
-
Assemble valve spring compressor with
handle in locked position. Ensure that jaw end is aligned
squarely on spring retaining cap and centre of valve head
to clear collets.
-
Ensure that there is no sideways movement
as actuating screw T-Bar is screwed down to compressor
valve spring and expose collets. If spring cap refuses
to free and release collets, lift locking lever to release
compressor and repeat step 3 above.
-
Remove collets and release locking
handle to remove compressor. Always release pressure on
compressor by slowing releasing locking handle before
removing tool from head. Valve spring and collets can
be ejected at high speed if compressor is allowed to slip.
Valve spring assembly can then be removed from head.
-
Tool is now pre-set to compress next
valve spring. Repeat the valve removal procedure for remaining
valves. Keep all parts from each valve together in its
original position.
-
Remove all carbon deposits and any
remains of old gasket from cylinder head. Taking care
to avoid damaging machined face of head. Carefully inspect
and clean all valve seats, valves etc. Re-grind/re-cut
valve seats as necessary and re-new any burnt, bent or
damaged valves.
-
Re-assemble and re-fit head following
workshop manual procedures.
